Melanotan II (MT-2) is a synthetic cyclic heptapeptide analog of α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH). It is a non-selective agonist at multiple melanocortin receptors — most importantly MC1R (pigmentation) and MC4R (appetite, libido, autonomic tone).
It has been studied since the 1990s in pigmentation and photoprotection research, and later in sexual-response and appetite-regulation studies.
MC1R activation on melanocytes drives eumelanin synthesis (the darker, photoprotective form of melanin), producing the pigmentation response.
MC4R activation in the central nervous system modulates sexual arousal circuits and reduces appetite via hypothalamic pathways.
Because MT-2 is non-selective, all melanocortin effects occur together — pigmentation, appetite suppression and libido changes are coupled.
